Shredded Brussels Sprouts and Apple Salad
If I am ever looking for another career, it won’t be at Target. I am not knowledgeable enough.
The other day, I was checking out and noticed the cashier had his hand in a cast. Thinking I was helping out, I told him I would bag. And then got a lesson in how to bag the right way. I guess I’ve been doing it all wrong. So very wrong.
“No, no,” he corrected as I attempted to put dish liquid in with shampoo. “Generally, things for the kitchen don’t go with things that you will use in other rooms.”
Oh, so I’m not supposed to wash my hair at the kitchen sink? My bad. Or maybe I wanted to do the dishes while I was in the shower. Would that be wrong?
“Don’t put the liquids in with non-liquids, in case they leak,” he further cautioned me. “And use these bags instead of those.”
Got it. No ketchup in with the T-shirts. Especially if I have opened the ketchup first. Can I put it in with the napkins since they come wrapped in plastic, or is that a no-no too? There are so many rules. I was starting to feel stressed, and we hadn’t even gotten to the toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Can cleaning products go together or do I have to follow the strict no mixing wet and dry rule?
“This is too big for a bag,” he warned as he handed me the 24 roll pack of paper towels.
At this point, it literally took all my willpower not to ask how exactly I was supposed to get it to the car if it didn’t fit in a bag. All. My. Willpower.
I’m pretty sure I failed his test, but at least now I understand why he had the shortest line.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups thinly sliced Brussels sprouts
- 1 large honey crisp apple (about 1 1/2 cups) peeled and grated
- 1/3 cup thinly sliced fennel
- 1/3 cup walnut pieces
- 1 1/2 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 Tablespoons avocado oil (or oil of choice)
- pinch of salt
Directions:
- Combine the sprouts through fennel in a large bowl.
- In a small bowl or small jar with a lid, combine the lemon juice and oil. Add salt to taste. Pour over the sprout mixture and toss to combine. Refrigerate till ready to serve.
- To serve, put into medium bowl and top with walnuts.
